Mercado Central

A visit to this unique indoor market should not be missed during your visit to Valencia. It is one of Valencia's most distinctive buildings and one of the popular sights in Valencia.

Mercado Central (Mercat Central in Valencian) is located in the heart of Valencia's historic centre (Ciutat Vella), close to other special buildings such as Valencia Cathedral (La Seu) and the beautiful La Lonja de la Seda.

The covered market was designed around 1914 in Art Nouveau style and has a dome of about 30 meters high and is made of iron, crystal and ceramics. The design is by the architect Francisco Guardia and Alejandro Soler. The Central Market was officially opened in 1928.

In total, the Mercado Central spans an area of over 8100 square meters. This makes it one of the largest (and oldest) market halls in Europe with many local products, such as oranges, herbs and olives, but also fresh fish and delicious hams and cheeses.
